WELCOME!
This year 806 will have an art- and ultimately- human experience like no other. They will work closely with Spoken Word artist, Mikal Lee, from the Urban Arts Program, and their teachers Ms. Taylor and Ms. Diana to create various forms of art that will guide them in finding their voice this year. Listen carefully as our 8th graders take one small step in Spoken Word and one giant leap towards defining their identities.
Foundation Statement:
Defining one’s self in a community is an exciting and daunting experience. Often times it can be difficult to understand how you fit, especially when tackling the many choices of adolescence. Asking the question, “What is a leader?” we will strengthen, develop, and reinforce literacy for ELL students, helping them define their identity. Through exploration of similar stories, personal interviews, reflections, and critiques- while utilizing the hip hop spirit of innovation and spoken word, students will begin to connect themselves to their identities through monologues created with their own characters. Using various media such as video, internet, and audio, as well as the viewing of live arts, students will connect to their inner voice through the exploration of a larger whole.
